The Command to Sit -
This is the most popular and fundamental command to teach your dog, and it should most likely be the first thing you teach him. For most training, using a treat as a reward for excellent behavior works effectively. To keep your dog in place, you'll need to attach a leash to his collar. Show your dog a goodie in your palm and place it over his head, encouraging him to look up, then say "Sit." Your dog will sometimes sit only by holding the treat over his head. If he does not sit, lay your other hand on his back and gently press down while repeating "Sit." Once he sits, immediately give him with the treat and praise him by saying "Good Boy" in a cheerful voice and vigorously pet him to show him you are pleased with his answer to your "Sit" order. It is critical to reward him soon after he responds appropriately so that he understands why he is receiving the incentive.
The Lie Down Order -
You can advance to the "Lie Down" command once your dog has learned the "Sit" command. This is also accomplished with the use of a treat. First, instruct your dog to "Sit." Do not reward him for sitting. While he is seated, take a treat in your hand and place it in front of him, very close to the floor, and say "Lie Down." If required, place your other hand on your dog's shoulders and softly press down until he lies down, or gently tug on his leash downward. When your dog lies down, instantly reward him with a treat, say "Good Boy" in a happy voice, and vigorously pat him to show him you are pleased with his answer to your "Lie Down" order. The tone of your voice is crucial in conveying to your pet that you are satisfied with his answer to your command.
Maintain Command -
The "Stay" command is a little trickier than the "Sit" and "Lie Down" commands. It is critical to select a suitable time of day to begin working with your dog on the "Stay" command. Knowing your own dog and recognizing when he exhibits a relaxed or mellow demeanor are critical. You don't want to start this training when your dog is highly happy or lively. When teaching the "Stay" command, utilize a treat like you did with the other training commands. Give your dog the sit or lie down command to begin this training. When he is seated or lying down, say "Stay" and raise your hand as if signaling someone to stop. Give the dog a treat, say "Good Boy," and pet him if he doesn't move for 4 or 5 seconds. Give him praise only if he stays for 4 or 5 seconds. Try again if he does not obey your command. Increase the amount of time he must "Stay" before you give him praise once he understands the concept. To encourage him to stay, you may need to repeat the "Stay" order several times and place your hand in a stop posture. Give him the "Stay" order and slowly back away a few feet, gradually increasing the distance until he understands the "Stay" command. When training your dog, remember to be patient with him. If training does not go well today, simply try again another day. Patience and perseverance are never wasted.
Use Traditional Training Methods -
When I say "Traditional" training approaches, I'm talking to a few fundamental techniques for training your dog.
- The first and most important requirement is patience. When training your dog new tricks, you must be patient with him. Various canines learn at different rates, just like people. Be patient if your dog does not understand a new command. You should not yell at or bully your dog. It's sometimes best to stop training and start again another day.
- Another crucial aspect of dog training is voice inflection. This is referred to as speaking in a "Happy Voice" to praise your dog when he correctly reacts to your command.
- Another frequent or conventional method of educating your dog is to use dog treats. Although goodies are important in the early stages of training a command, you don't want to be carrying a pocket full of treats with you at all times in order for your dog to execute your directions. Once your dog has mastered a new command, gradually remove the treats and replace them with a "Good Boy" and energetic petting.
-It is critical that everyone in your family uses the same commands so that your dog learns not become confused about what is expected of him, for example, "lay down" vs. "down." It makes no difference what the command is as long as everyone uses the same command.
- Finally, make your dog's training sessions enjoyable for him. He should equate training sessions with enjoyment. So, following a training session, spend ten or fifteen minutes playing with your dog to make the lesson fun for both you and your dog.
